I just had to share this incredible piece of performance art I just ran across. It apparently was performed on the Ukraine’s Got Talent tv show which she subsequently won. The artist is Kseniya Simonova and her medium is sand.
Powerful storytelling in a totally unexpected form.
Wow.
See, that’s pretty sweet – and people say there are no new art forms! Certainly sand painting is nothing new, but here the focus is the painting’s emotional and pictorial progression over time. It is not sequential art, it is gestural and vividly living.
The Youtube video label calls it “sand animation?” I don’t believe that’s right at all; not even slightly. In animation, the animator is subtracted leaving only the frames between. This is a fluid medium, with sculptor and sculpture equally on display. Not animation, no! Rather it is as you say: performance art. In fact, a far better fit for it than what usually goes under that cringe-stained name!
Agreed..I had trouble with the “animation” description so I had to call it something else. The term “performance art” usually makes me shudder considering the flotsam that usually finds it way into the category. But it did indeed feel right for this kind of art. Glad you saw it the same way! đŸ™‚
