I was doing some image searches and ran across a picture of a carved watermelon. As often happens to me in a case like this I lost sight of what I was originally searching for. Instead I happily spent an hour searching for, and looking in awe at, the intricate art of melon sculpting. Apparently it is an old art form in both Thailand and Japan.
My husband Gerrit carves some incredible pumpkins every year (2006, 2007, 2008) and even did a Granny Smith Apple carving of the Cheshire Cat for me. I think I am going to have to encourage him to give a watermelon a try for the next family gathering (shh don’t tell anyone it will be a surprise)
In tribute to the unofficial start of summer here in the US I thought I would post 25 of these incredible pieces of art. Enjoy!

Oh does anyone know the story behind the crane and turtle? Since there are two of them I figure there is some background there. Can anyone tell me what the character on the back of the turtle means?
Ha.. I wish I could produce some nice sculptures like those or the pumpkins we have seen before. All I do is carving holes… and that’s where my skills end. 🙂
I love these! After looking them again I noticed that is not Picasso, but Vincent Van Gogh!
