Just want to get this off my chest to be able to say I noticed the early sparks of these meme. Problem is I don’t think anyone will ever recognize it is a meme. Just like the cupcake meme I “outed” but no one recognizes either. There are these curious societal obsessions that pop up form time to time that for lack of any better term I classify as a meme. Whether they truly fall into the category I suppose is up for debate. You can be the judge.
For the uninitiated:
1 : an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media)
2 : a pervasive thought or thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable
The pants thing entered my consciousness a month or two ago. Mostly just passing remarks in blogs, emails or on Twitter. But once I took notice it was like when you get a new car and then you start seeing that car everywhere. [Okay, full disclosure time. Those that know me know I don’t have a car or even drive. But this is for illustration purposes so cut me some slack]. Pants comments–mostly references to dreading putting on ones pants or not being able to wait to take ones pants off–began appearing with alarming (another meme: use of the word ‘alarming’ is alarmingly on the rise) frequency. I can’t make it through a day without out seeing several pants references.
The same thing happened with cupcakes. I think the cupcake meme is losing a tad bit of traction these days. But it is still going pretty strong and I am seeing at least a few references a week. Don’t get me wrong I am all up on top of that cupcake train myself because hey who doesn’t enjoy a tasty cupcake every once in awhile? Besides mini anything, even cakes, are cute.
Truth is we are probably really mid pants meme if not nearing the end. But I am just happy to have documented it before it disappears into the Ether. Long live the meme!
