I got to see a screening of Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” last night courtesy of the Maryland Film Festival crew. I loved it.
I went in knowing next to nothing. Which is the way I prefer to head into a theater. Any expectations I may have had about seeing a film that took on the often heatedly discussed “Is it art?” question were off base. While certainly that is one of the many questions that play a part in this film, it’s so much more than that.
Oh and did I mention you’ll laugh…a lot?
Go see it. You will not be sorry. Doesn’t even matter if you are a street art fan or not.
Baltimore folks it’s opening today at the Landmark. Buy your tickets now.
Outside of Baltimore folks check the website to see when it is coming to a theater near you and then buy your tickets.
Then be sure to tell everyone you know to go see it. The promotion for this film is being done on a shoestring and is relying on word of mouth to get it seen.
Stumbled across a video today of Australian artist Buff Diss doing his thing. His thing is creating playful graffiti style street art with masking and electrical tape.
With the city as his canvas Buff’s art is confounding authorities since it comes right off easily with just a pull of the tape and it no way permanently affects the object it is placed on. This confusion, a kind of communication itself, is an aspect of his work that he takes great joy in. He says his art as a kind of conversation with the spaces where they are located and says he could spend the rest of his life leaving art in the rooms of derelict warehouses.
Unique and refreshing I think this is one to watch.
Take a look at a few of his pieces and then be sure to visit his Flickr for more.
And below is that video with the artist at work. (Song on video NSFW…just turn the sound down.)

Not new, but worth watching. This wall painting animation by Italian artist BLU, is incredible. BLU specializes in murals and often uses black and white line drawings in his work. Be sure to check out his website which is a lot of fun and features a bunch of other paintings.
Artists Anderson Augusto (aka SÃO) and Leonardo Delafuente (aka Delafuente) are bringing art to the streets of their native Brazil, literally. Together they formed 6emeia a project formed to transform the lives of those living in their Barra Funda neighborhood through art.
I ran across a Flickr stream that really caught my attention. Was that a little girl doing graffiti? Was she actually doing a tattoo on someone in that picture? After marveling at her work I had to find out more.
Sol likes painting skeletons.
Turns out that yep this incredible colorful graffiti was indeed being done by 10 year old girl named Solveig Barlow. The graffiti artist in the pint size body has been compared to legendary Bansky and is taking London by storm since she was discovered.
Below are just a few of her pieces. Be sure to visit her Flickr stream to see some more really impressive work dating back to when she was just 9 (!).

Sol generally creates her pieces legally in the “wastelands” near her home and gained some attention after The Sun in London ran a couple stories on her. The talented artist can be seen in action doing her first tattoo on a video on The Sun website.
If she is doing this stuff at 9 and 10 I can’t wait to see what she is doing in a few more years. My hat’s off to you Sol. Keep painting and creating!
