Bone-crushing soul-killing monotony…

The numbing sameness in “Waiting for the End of the World” is downright palpable. You, like Petr, find yourself waiting for something…anything at all…to happen. But does it?

[Hint take it full screen for better watching.]

Let the Right One In…

There’s this really extraordinary Swedish horror film called “Let the Right One In.” If you are at all a fan of the darker side of film and you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you give it a try.

It left a lasting impression on me. And save for a few minor quibbles I’d put it towards the top of my rather short list of horror films worth watching.

Clippage….

The atmosphere in this film is just incredible. Everything is mostly understated which is very rare and very nice. Not even a little whiff of Saw-the-movie-that-ruined-horror-films-forever here. And the two young actors that played the leads…Lina Leandersson and Kåre Hedebrant…are, in a word, fantastic.

Yes, really a fine movie.

So now here’s the trailer for the the surprise surprise Hollywood-ized remake that is on the horizon.

Why do they feel the need to scrape the very soul out of such a good thing. Why?

This COULD be good…

New could-be-good film on the horizon.

It’s called Monsters. And with a budget of just $15 million (yeah I know…just, hah!…but that’s cheap by Hollywood standards….really), extra terrestrials, and a gritty realistic look I suppose it was inevitable that I thought of District 9 when I saw the trailer.

Official synopsis…

Six years ago previously, a NASA probe returning to earth with samples of an alien life form, crashed over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear, and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”… The story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

Yup, might have to see this one.

Happy Animation Friday….

I was watching a TED talk and got served up this lovely bit of animation after having watched one of the talks. It’s a little funny, a little sweet, a little sad, and a little thought provoking.

I thought it was worth sharing so I tracked it down on Vimeo.

It’s called “Good Vibrations” and the writer/director is Jeremy Clapin. It was produced for the Responsibility Project for Liberty Mutual.

35 MM is a clever 2 minute journey through the history of film done in a lovely minimalistic movie poster style by animators Felix Meyer and Pascal Monaco. Most excellent.

“The Girl on the Wall” is an oh so sweet mix of live action and animation by Greek filmmaker Gabriel Psaltakis. Lovely.

Enjoy…

Hover over the pics for the answers along with the year they were released.

Did you get any right?

Bonus…the not to be missed trailer from “The Giant Claw.”

I present a montage of the 100 greatest movie insults ever uttered and preserved on celluloid. Or so says the montager (yes I just made that word up) Harry Hanrahan.

But wait wait..don’t push the play button yet. First a warning. Lots of nasty blue words spoken in this thing. If you are known to have sensitive ears or a delicate nature steer clear.
