6 Pieces of Furniture that Kind Of Scare Me

Square

I admire the thinking I tend to like edgy unique pieces of furniture. A whole room of quirky would never do. But one or two off the beaten path pieces mixed in with some traditional or retro furniture I find appealing.

That said I live mostly contentedly with an eclectic hodgepodge of used and found pieces in my little dollhouse of a home. So this pursuit of unique is mostly done in my head through extensive online surfing. In that surfing I occasionally run across furniture that goes a little more off the beaten path than I expected and moves into my “that scares me” zone.

Here are 6 such pieces for your enjoyment.

[Note: And to be truthful no, they do not actually scare me. In fact they mostly amuse me and in the case of the nail bench I’d like to own it. But I think the word “Scare” is more engaging than “Amuse”. Don’t you agree? 🙂 ]

The Cipria Setee, part of Edra collection, comes in other colors too. So you can match your fake fur covered sofa to the rest of your decor. Not my favorite Campana brother’s design, but it does make me smile and there are others designs of theirs (like this outdoor chair ) that I would love to have.

Mushroom Bench by Shinwei Rhoda Yen

I admire the thinking behind this furniture. I really do. Having something made out of natural materials that eventually breaks down and once again becomes a part of the environment. But the idea of sitting on furniture with mushrooms growing out of it icks me out a bit. Designer Shinwei Rhoda Yen impregnates the wood with mushroom spoors. After awhile being exposed to the outdoor elements the mushrooms grow and become a part of your furniture living off of the wood for a few years until all the nutrients are gone.

Gravity Balans chair by Varier

The Gravity Balans chair makes my list simply because I know by looking at it that were I to sit in it I would end up in an embarrassing tangled pile of limbs on the floor in no time. There is no way as uncoordinated as I am I could manage to sit comfortably in this chair. That guy looks so relaxed and calm in the picture. Were I to be sitting in it you would see a mask of sheer terror on my face for the split second before I went crashing to the floor.

Giant Brush Furniture by Jason Taylor

Generally I am a fan of oversized objects. I find them funny. I have been the owner of an oversized pencil, a pen and even I believe a paperclip. But why anyone would want to own a piece of Giant Brush Furniture is really beyond me. With all due respect given to designer Jason Taylor I will not be adding a piece to my wishlist any time soon.

Furniture made of nails is inherently scary, but to be honest I covet the Bench of Nails by artist Jay-Hyo Lee. Not very practical I admit. But what an awesome looking piece of furniture. When you look at it close up it is even more incredible with each of the reclaimed nails hammered and turned into a perfectly rippling surface over the solid piece of wood.

Update: Had to add one more to this list. But this piece of furniture is truly scary. Posted on Gizmodo today, I couldn’t help but to share it with you. The stool is modeled after a torture devise called the Judas Cradle.  It involved the lowering of an unfortunate naked victim onto its pyramid shaped top. Truly horrifying.
